Sustainable Harvest-Documentary screening
Roots of Renewal, a new short documentary by Sustainable Harvest International, shows the critical role of small farms globally. It will be screened at the Gates Auditorium at College Of the Atlantic on Tuesday, July 8th at 5:30pm during an event that will include conversation with people behind the film, refreshments and opportunities to donate. Join Martha Tod Dudman at the Northeast Harbor Library to celebrate the release of curio (June 2025), her latest novel. Northeast Harbor Library-Karin Tilberg Author Talk
Karin Tilberg, the past-president/CEO of the Forest Society of Maine, will discuss the seismic changes to conservation in the last three decades and share untold stories of conserving Maine’s North Woods. She will explore how people’s love of a place brought about action leading to historic achievements in American conservation and how these stories could guide us now and far into the future. Acadia Dance Festival
The Acadia Dance Festival returns to Mount Desert Island for its sixth season, presenting acclaimed contemporary dance company Nimbus Dance in collaboration with musicians from the Bar Harbor Music Festival. This annual celebration of movement and music brings world-class performance and dance education to Downeast Maine.
On Saturday at 11 a.m., Nimbus presents a Family Matinee, a relaxed and engaging program suited for children ages 3 and up. This colorful performance features narrative dances and includes appearances by local youth from Camp Beech Cliff and the Acadia Dance Festival Intensive.
The Festival brings professional dance artists to Mount Desert Island each year and creates opportunities for local residents and young dancers to engage meaningfully with the world of contemporary dance. Local students ages 14–22 can take part in the Acadia Dance Festival Intensive, held at ArtWaves MDI from July 28 to August 2. Participants train with Nimbus faculty in ballet and contemporary dance and engage in workshops covering improvisation, injury prevention, and more. Younger dancers can join the Nimbus Dance Specialty Camp at Camp Beech Cliff. Students from both programs will perform at the Criterion Theatre alongside Nimbus’s professional company. Northeast Harbor Library-Geoscience Lecture
Join marine geophysicist and international educator Mike Coffin, PhD for a lecture titled “Greenhouse & Icehouse Worlds”. Earth’s climate over the ~4.54 billion year history of the planet has fluctuated between two primary states: greenhouse and icehouse Earth. Greenhouse Earth is characterized by no permanent glaciers; icehouse Earth by permanent glaciers. Coffin investigates interactions between the oceanic environment and the solid Earth, and will discuss scientific evidence for the two states, focusing mainly on the current icehouse Earth. Northeast Harbor Library-Sports Gear Swap
Disused sports gear cluttering up your home? Give it a second life by donating or trading it to somebody new. All items will be made available for free to all; no contribution needed. This program is a collaboration of the Sustainability Committee of the Town of Mount Desert and the Northeast Harbor Library
The library will accept advance donations of sports gear in good condition during open hours from May 24th until 10:00 am on June 14th. Accepted items include bicycles, skis, climbing equipment, bats, balls, rackets, sticks, wearable gear and the like!

Northeast Harbor Library-NEHL Lecture - History of Lumberjills
Learn about the history of Lumberjills during WWI & WWII and their impact on modern day female foresters with the founder/owner of Axe Women Loggers of Maine, Alissa Wetherbee.
In addition to her extensive track record as a competitor, promoter, and instructor in logging sports, Wetherbee is deeply involved in preserving its heritage, serving as a member of the Board of Directors at the Maine Forest & Logging Museum in Bradley, Maine.

MDI Hospital Annual Auxiliary Member Meeting

An evening of strings and piano chamber music with DownEast New Music's artistic directors Clare Monfredo, Edward Kass, and Conrad Winslow. This program of cello, double bass, and piano chamber music includes music of the 19th-21st centuries by Beethoven, Rossini, Shostakovich, and a new piece by pianist and composer Conrad Winslow.

Northeast Harbor Library-Piano Concert
Pianists Michael Coonrod and Danny Holt team to perform beloved classics for piano duo by Mozart, Schubert, and Brahms; plus works by Piazzolla, Ravel, and more. Coonrod recently retired from almost five decades of teaching at Interlochen Arts Academy, where he shaped generations of young pianists. Holt recently relocated from Southern California to Downeast Maine, and was Coonrod's student more than 25 years ago. He is thrilled to welcome his former teacher to Maine for concerts this spring.

Northeast Harbor Library-Creative Process Workshop: Crafting Scenery
Step into the creative world of multidisciplinary performing artist Lelania Avila as she develops a new original work. Participants will be taught crafting techniques using recycled materials and contribute to the creation of scenery, which will be featured in an immersive puppet theater installation debuting this May. While crafting, Lelania will lead discussion on approaches to artmaking and share details about her upcoming show.

Originally started as a simple opportunity to give those around the village and throughout our town an excuse to gather a couple of times a month, the program has grown exponentially over the past decade. In recent years, it is not uncommon to have over 150 guests from across MDI stop by to join us for lunch!
Thanks to the generous support of our local business sponsors, we are able to offer lunches at a suggested donation of just $10, and all seniors are invited to enjoy their meal “on the house.” This year’s Cafe season gets underway on Thursday, October 17th, and will then meet on the first and third Thursday through April 17th.

Northeast Harbor Library : Intro to Chess Workshop
On Saturday, March 8th from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. the Northeast Harbor Library is hosting a free drop-in chess workshop in collaboration with MDI Chess. Learn the core principles of the game and how to trick opponents with sneaky tactics! Friendly instruction for complete newcomers, beginners ready to learn more, and a space for more experienced players to practice their game. Drop in (and out) as your schedule allows; participants are not required to stay for the full four hours. MDI Chess is a volunteer group of coaches and players dedicated to sharing their love of the game.

Northeast Harbor Library : Craft Swap
On Friday, March 7th from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, the Northeast Harbor Library is hosting their annual Craft Swap; a free drop-in event for crafters and hobbyists to exchange unused art supplies and crafting tools. All are invited to take something home whether or not they have donated items.
The library will accept donations of like-new and gently used materials in advance during open hours (starting February 14th). Accepted materials include canvases, beads, yarn, scissors, paintbrushes, fabric, knitting needles and embroidery items.

Northeast Harbor Library : DRJ Community Circle
Community Circles are a space to come together, share and listen to each other around a variety of difficult and sensitive topics so that we may build healthy relationships, understand and support each other while acknowledging differing experiences. Facilitated by Downeast Restorative Justice, each meeting will focus on a different discussion topic guided by the interests of participants and recent events. We’ll meet on the first Thursday of each month, with breaks in April, August, and December; intermittent or occasional participation is welcome.
At the opening of each circle, DRJ’s Restorative Practitioner Kayla Gagnon will introduce Restorative principles & practices to facilitate the circle conversation. There is no expectation to share; showing up to listen is just as valuable.

Island Connections Sugar Showdown
We are thrilled to announce the return of the Sugar Showdown, back by popular demand after last year's incredible success! This baking competition invites attendees to taste delicious treats, vote for their favorites, and participate in the raffle of stunning showstopper cakes. There will also be live music, a cash bar, and lots of Valentine's Day love!
